Absolute Mykonos Suites & More (The Windmill Suite)

Most hotel suites are, structurally speaking, just rooms with a nice view. Ours wasn't. Absolute Mykonos's signature option is an actual windmill, one of the island's iconic stone towers, converted into a multi-level suite, and staying in it turned out to be every bit as novel as it sounds, along with a couple of quirks that come bundled in with the novelty.

We'd heard for years that Alisal was "the" family ranch trip for a certain kind of West Coast family, the sort of place people go back to every summer without really questioning it anymore. Within about an hour of arriving, that made complete sense, and so did a lot of what came with it.

Anantara Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort

There's a point on the drive out from Abu Dhabi where the road empties out completely, the last petrol station disappears behind you, and the dunes start to look the same in every direction. It's right around then that a fortified, castle-like compound starts rising out of the sand ahead, looking less like a hotel and more like something you've imagined. Qasr Al Sarab translates roughly to "Castle of Mirages", and the name does a surprisingly good job of describing the actual experience of arriving.

Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives

Picture the classic Maldives sales pitch: a tiny private island, just you, the ocean, and total silence. Atmosphere Kanifushi isn't that, and to its credit it doesn't pretend to be. This is a big, social, all-inclusive resort, and once you accept that, it's actually very good at what it does. The honest framing here is less "is this a good hotel" and more "is this the right hotel for the trip you're actually taking."

Bellagio Las Vegas

Reviewing a Las Vegas hotel requires a slightly different rulebook to reviewing one anywhere else, because some of what would be a dealbreaker elsewhere is, here, just Tuesday. The Bellagio mostly understands that distinction. One thing that happened on this stay, though, fell well outside even Vegas's generous tolerances, and it's worth being upfront about that before getting into the good stuff, of which there's plenty.

Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel

Some hotels have a signature dish, others a signature view. The Beverly Wilshire has a signature film, and more than three decades on, Pretty Woman is still doing a remarkable amount of the heavy lifting here. It's not the only reason to stay, but it's impossible to ignore, and honestly, the hotel doesn't really want you to.
